                        "YESTERDAY'S BREAD":

The Eucharist and Social Justice. Paulist Press

"We followed the garbage truck as it rumbled its way out of Quito towards Chilibulo. It was my first trip to Ecuador; my first trip to Latin America. The truck stopped at a vast landfill on the outskirts of the Ecuadorean capital to disgorge its load of trash from the restaurants and "upper market" area of Quito. I watched with horror as the mountains of trash heaved with activity. I presumed it was hordes of scavenging dogs. But it was people. crowds of hungry men, women and children frantically burrowing in other people's trash for food, for yesterday's bread."

"A Toast to Humanity"

"The Eucharist is a toast to the whole of humanity. The words of consecration focus our minds and hearts on "the cup of my blood...shed for you and for all." For, the eucharistic cup is raised for the total body of Christ; for all of God's children "wherever they may be," and not just for those present in our often hurried daily celebrations or our more often than not routine and unreflective Sunday liturgies."

"Ábreme. Entregarse al amor." TESTIMONIO, Jan-Feb, 2007
